An Open Letter to the Esteemed Elders

Doubling the number of jobs worldwide.

Double-Up is a program to reduce the working week from forty hours to twenty while doubling the number of employees, so that current production schedules are fully maintained. Workers gain time for education and for family without any loss of income; employers gain a doubled workforce at a genuine saving.

The mechanism is simple. GGT offers to pay employers more than enough to employ twice their present number of workers, provided the employer agrees to hire them. GGT’s contribution covers the full benefits package — estimated at five hours’ wage-equivalent per week — together with twenty-five additional hours of pay for the additional worker: a total GGT contribution of fifty hours of wages or salary for each pair of workers. Each worker is paid for a full forty hours of labor weekly — eighty hours of pay per pair — and the employer retains the balance of twenty hours per week, which pays the cost of the benefits.

The employer thus receives the same amount of work as before, at a cost reduced from forty hours’ pay for forty hours’ work to thirty hours’ pay for the same forty hours — and gains, besides, the freedom to offer unpaid training and education programs to a workforce that now has the time to receive them.

A plan to create a new, resource-based society that can reduce the footprint of cities upon the planet by up to 90 percent.

We convey here a new idea — a viable concept for the future growth of communities, seemingly drawn from the cinema of tomorrow — in which technologies now waiting to burst forth will play their full part in sustainable living, and in which fully self-contained, self-governed cities will leave no damaging footprint upon the land on which they stand, while offering the new societies within them a way to truly thrive.

Each of these fully planned cities is a resource-focused urban complex, designed to reduce its load upon the planet by eighty to ninety percent. In place of the sprawling footprint of hundreds of individual homes and lesser condominium complexes, each urban city-pod is self-contained within one to three ultra-modern, high-comfort, high-rise buildings, accommodating approximately one thousand families per facility — with most units built for families of four.

Each unit is projected at approximately five million dollars, a figure that encompasses not only the living space itself but every other provision required of such a new resource-based society. Each complex will house approximately ten thousand people in amply comfortable, state-of-the-art surroundings — gracious accommodations conceived to please the most discriminating resident, equipped with every advanced technology available to humankind.

Food-cash liquidity for everyone worldwide.

This project injects substantial liquidity into a nation’s economy while providing immediate and enduring financial assistance to every legal resident — without creating a welfare mentality or a welfare state, and while restoring and preserving the pride and self-worth of the individual. It is the first of our projects designed expressly for the developing world.

Capital injections will combine the national currency with a supplemental, complementary cryptocurrency — an instrument that history has shown capable of multiplying the effectiveness of an economy by twelve to more than four hundred times. It is our goal to have the basic program operational within six months of initial funding, and the full program within eighteen months, in at least two countries, if not more. Throughout, it is our firm intention to minimize every negative impact upon existing operations — above all, the loss of any jobs and the creation of inflation of any kind.

The plan is built upon the existing mobile-telephone infrastructure: it provides mobile phones to the participants, delivers educational programs and training packages through them, operates a phone-based currency-transfer system, and integrates with the local bill-payment systems already established in these countries. The program further incorporates measures to eliminate ninety-nine percent of all plastics flowing to the ocean, within a very short period.

The first phase will engage two nations of Latin America and the Caribbean, with approximately forty million participants in total. Subsequent phases could conceivably embrace all nations.

An incentive system to transition all food production to organic.

At the level of the retail store, certified organic food will be doubly subsidized. First, a subsidy paid directly to the retailer will bring the retail price of organic food to at least twenty-five percent below that of its non-organic counterpart. Second, the organic producer will be subsidized with an additional one hundred percent of the wholesale selling price, so that each sale returns twice the income.

The Global Genius Trust will serve as the proponent agency for process and quality inspectors, overseeing that the subsidy funds are applied faithfully to the production of quality organic goods.

Free education for everyone on Earth.

It is predicted that over the next twenty-five years the nature of work in modern society will change beyond recognition, and that as much as eighty percent of today’s jobs requiring human interaction will cease to exist. Artificial intelligence and other new technologies will minimize the need for human interaction across most working environments, leaving great numbers without employment and altering the very structure of societies around the world. Leading institutions already contemplate a guaranteed minimum wage for all, employed or not, in recognition of this coming change in the structure of society — a reflection of our changing workforce and of new technology alike.

This program answers the deep human need to be productive, while preparing society for a higher level of functioning and for the ever more sophisticated technical training that an advancing civilization demands. The first phase will engage two nations of Latin America and the Caribbean, with as many as twenty-five million possible participants; subsequent phases will extend to all nations, beginning with the least developed. Enrollment will begin with those already in educational programs and those seeking additional training to improve their present employment opportunities. The world’s educational programs will need to be expanded to receive the coming surge of students — a work of time, and of extensive change, reflecting the near-term transformation of our society.

Free public transportation for everyone on Earth.

This program addresses two questions of transportation at once: the cost of mass transportation by bus, and the cost of transportation for the disabled.

For mass transit, each participant receives a near-field-communication (NFC) device — a smartphone (as with Apple Pay), an attachment for a key chain, or even a ring for wearing — with which the participant touches the reader to “pay” the fare. The program supplies the NFC readers to the bus operators, who bill the program monthly for the fares of the individuals they carry.

For the disabled — whom the cooperative buses are not equipped to receive by wheelchair — the taxis, abundant and relatively inexpensive in most countries, will serve instead. The disabled participant carries the same NFC device as the mass-transit rider; the taxi companies receive the same readers; and they, like the bus companies, bill the program monthly.

Four principal benefits follow. First, the program increases the individual’s discretionary funds, to the benefit of local merchants and companies. Second, it provides funding to the taxis, opening their doors to more of the disabled and placing more money in the hands of their drivers, to be spent locally in turn. Third, it is among the gentlest of all ways to place more money into circulation throughout the world, for the money once spent on transportation may now be spent elsewhere. Fourth, more people may take the buses when riding is free rather than paying for gasoline and the wear of their own vehicles — reducing the number of automobiles on the road, the wear upon the roads, and the emissions above them.

A voluntary program of family planning.

Our plan offers voluntary surgical sterilization, together with a monetary incentive to those individuals who freely choose to take part. Though surgical sterilization may carry an unhappy connotation, we speak here of nothing forced — neither forced sterilization nor abortion. Rather, we offer the individual a financial incentive to curtail the number of births, granting the family financial security apart from a large family. Indonesia’s successful program of family planning transformed the old saying “Many children, many blessings” into “Many children, many worries.”

Parents in the developing world have long counted upon their children to work their farms and to provide for them in old age. Though this has served in the past, today the education, healthcare, and daily upkeep of children cost families more than they are able to bear — and still they hesitate before permanent measures to limit the number of children in their families, for the mortality of children remains high.

This program answers that individual concern directly: alongside the financial incentive granted to the person agreeing to permanent sterilization, it provides life insurance for each existing child, so that the parents hold a financial guarantee should a child be lost.

Free online books, movies, music, and software.

This is a plan to give members of the public free access to online books, movies, music, and software through the GG Foundation. Injections of funds into this project allow individuals, groups, and organizations to receive these online resources at no cost of their own, while the respective artists, authors, and creators are paid for these resources through the GG Management Trust. Each author will further receive an additional percentage of the proceeds in GEO, in service of the broader goal of introducing GEO.

The online resource agents — Amazon among them — will benefit in turn through boosted sales, higher profit turnovers, and the creation and sustaining of jobs. This project will at last provide existing authors and artists the payments their work deserves, giving rise to the arts and entertainment industry, creating more jobs, and offering the public a greater variety to enjoy than ever before.

Saving the world from a potential life-extinction catastrophe.

Though Your Excellencies may not often hear it spoken of, the most probable major catastrophe to strike the Earth at any moment is a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun. We ask you to pause upon this point, and to let it settle: nothing on this planet is potentially more dangerous — nothing. And yet a modest budget can prevent a CME from claiming the lives of nearly everyone in the civilized and industrialized world.

Should a sufficiently strong CME reach the Earth, it will produce an electromagnetic pulse (EMP). Within minutes to hours, that pulse would permanently destroy virtually everything electrical and electronic. Consider it for a moment: not a single such thing would ever work again. Everyone on planet Earth would be returned to the Stone Age, and billions would perish within days for want of food, water, heating, and medications.

Nor is this conjecture. It happened fewer than two hundred years ago, in 1859, when the telegraph was the principal electrical device of the age — and telegraphs melted, and their lines burned. We did not then depend upon technology as we do now. Today, almost everything depends upon electrical and electronic operation, and all of it stands vulnerable to destruction. In conclusion: there is no higher priority in the world than this one. None.

A plan to aid the conversion from proprietary to open source, through the GG Foundation.

Take any industry as an example, and it becomes quickly apparent that the hoarding of information from competitors stagnates — or at the least slows — the progress of humanity at large. Remove the need for financial secrecy, and indeed transform openness itself into the corporate model, and a quantum leap of new innovation follows, to the benefit of all humankind and of our reach beyond this planet into the universe. Imagine an incentive by which one company calls its competitor to share information, in place of the secrecy that reigns today — Apple and Microsoft, and countless pairings besides. The idea speaks for itself.

The method is disarmingly simple: reach out to any company that holds proprietary assets of any kind, and aid them — financially and otherwise — in going open source. That is all. It will require many trillions to complete, and humanity will reap benefits unquantifiable and unimaginable from a fully, one-hundred-percent open-source society. It is, moreover, a step toward ending financial tyranny, greed, and the darker outcomes that companies have too often demonstrated throughout history.

Exceptions will be made for companies whose secrets serve no purpose other than the manufacture of weapons — for we have no wish to spread the knowledge of building more of them — and for such other cases as prudence may yet identify. What opens before us is a new paradigm of worldwide cooperation over competition, without causing any reduction in profits.

The initial objective is to cleanse the soil of hazardous chemicals, heavy metals, and pathogenic microbes — rendering it fertile and ready for organic farming — from the Himalayas, along the courses of all the rivers, down to the sea.

The work employs a safe, natural bacterial and enzymatic cleaning system for fresh water bodies and streams, for contaminated soils, and for the waters of the ocean. This cocktail of enzymes and microbes may be applied in both the environment and agriculture, and is gentle enough to drink, and safe enough for swimming pools and drinking water. The first undertaking — Southeast Asia and India, some 7.8 million square kilometers — requires five years and twenty billion dollars.

The subsequent objectives extend these technologies across the globe: to garbage sites; to agricultural and effluent waste streams; to liquid waste and sewage; and to contaminated soils everywhere. They further encompass the treatment of the global ocean waters, the reforestation of chosen restored areas, application to the areas of aquaculture, and the use of enzymes in the place of pesticides. The full undertaking — 510 million square kilometers — requires ten years and $1.3 trillion.

Objective: to restore the world’s water and marine systems to pristine vitality — the health of the waters, the restoration of coral and marine habitat, the cleansing of all the world’s oceans, and the extension of that science into every freshwater habitat, lake, and river system.

The planet’s oceans are already in the midst of a global extinction event. If strong and effective steps toward resolution are not taken before the year 2030, the outcome for our planet will, at that point, become irreversible. The trouble is not merely pollution and the overharvesting of the oceans’ resources, but the long-term effects of these things, which are already spiraling out of control.

Overfishing has diminished our harvestable marine resources to less than twenty-five percent of their levels in the 1960s, and ocean warming — apart from CO₂ — is stripping away the world’s coral reefs at an accelerating pace. Marine professionals estimate that by 2030, more than seventy percent of the entire world’s coral reefs will be gone forever. And this is no mere sadness: life on this planet depends upon the coral reefs, which stand integral to the world’s production of oxygen — and that alone states the unarguable case for repairing the problem, and for setting to the task immediately.

As with all things global in nature, every country must take part in approving the greater number of the corrective measures. New laws of international waters will need to be drafted; international policing forces and a fully global fleet will be required. The cost of repairs and logistics, pursued at a level that overtakes the problem before it is too late, will demand multiple trillions of dollars each and every year for the next one hundred fifty years — and beyond that, the extended work required will exceed five centuries.

More than twenty major areas of operation must be dovetailed within this project, and each of these contains multiple projects within its own structure. Logistically speaking, this undertaking will require more resources than the First and Second World Wars combined.
