Chapter 19

GNOSIS

If you bring forth what is within you, what you have will save you. If you do not have that within you, what you do not have within you will kill you.Gospel of Thomas, saying 70

To me, the master of modern Gnosis is Samael Aun Weor. Samael Aun Weor wrote and spoke mostly about two subjects. The first, and most important, is the elimination of your egos; almost no chapter of his extensive library of spiritual books fails to discuss the how and the importance of eliminating all the egos.

Gnosis. Samael Aun Weor: spiritual leader and master.

The process of eliminating an ego starts with self-evaluation of one’s thoughts. For example, someone insults you. Instead of responding quickly and automatically, you should stop for a few seconds and observe your feelings and thoughts. You will notice that there is something there — not really quite you — ready to respond, and you may feel an array of emotions accompanying that ready-made response. Now, that automatic, quick response is most likely not in your best interest, and not really how you feel, or how you would respond, if you gave yourself time to think about all the consequences of what you were about to say.

The next step is to judge the ego. Only you can be the judge of a part of you. If you find this ego guilty of running your life for you, and you pass the sentence of wanting to be rid of it, then — and only then — you can proceed to the next step, which is the elimination of the ego. Master Samael Aun Weor divides our inner part into two: one he refers to as the Father, and the other as the Mother. In order to eliminate an ego, you must ask your inner being to do it for you — this is also called the subconscious, and it goes by many different names, depending on the source. Let us simply use Master Weor’s method.

Ask, in a respectful way, as if you were talking to yourself: “Mother Kundalini, please eliminate this ego, ‘…’. I have found it, I have judged it, and I have passed sentence. It serves me no good, and I do not want it anymore.” Surprisingly and amazingly, something miraculous happens after a while of doing this: these egos s-l-o-w-l-y start to disappear. In other words, you no longer get an automated response generated for you under the same, or very similar, circumstances. Note my emphasis: first of all, it is a slow process; do not expect results overnight. One has hundreds of egos, and hundreds of variations of the same ego, and it is a process of identifying each and every one.

It is not the same variation of an ego if a stranger you met a few seconds ago calls you an idiot as if a close relative does. One may draw a simple, quick response — like “you’re an idiot too” — while the other may draw a considerably more complex response, involving one or more feelings and thoughts. Master Samael Aun Weor, and many other masters such as Rama, have written thousands of pages on the subject of ego elimination. I do not pretend to cover it in detail here; not only would I be repeating what they have written so well, but it would not fit in this book. What I do want to stress is that this is one of the most important things you should learn. And one more thing: self-improvement is an uphill, lifetime job that gives a lot of satisfaction — but it is nonetheless an internal battle. Do NOT underestimate the egos: they do NOT want to die, and they do NOT want you to be rid of them. They are living parts of you, very much like a bacterium, virus, or parasite that depends on you for its existence — and even worse, because they possess a level of intelligence, and will put up a fight.

For example: I thought of myself as a well-balanced, peaceful individual. Thoughts about killing someone, or of finding malicious ways to hurt someone, had never entered my mind before I began working on the elimination of the egos. At the time, I was living in a quite ideal situation: I had almost everything anyone desires — wealthy enough not to have to worry about earning a daily living, plenty of food, plenty of tranquility, awesome weather, good relationships at home; in short, not much, and no one, to bother me. So I decided to start with the ego I thought would be the least challenging of all: the ego of anger. Was I in for a huge surprise. The minute I started to think about it, it was like waking an internal dragon. Soon someone said something I did not like, and all sorts of angry feelings came out of nowhere — and I do not mean a little angry, I mean a lot. So I noticed right away that it was an ego doing it for me, and I did not let it act. I quickly asked my Mother Kundalini to please eliminate this ego. I thought to myself, “Oh, that wasn’t so bad; I’ve got it under control.” But no — I was in for a bigger surprise. This went on for weeks. It got to the point where I was angry all day for no reason, so angry I could not even sleep — all for no reason other than this ego not wanting to die peacefully. Nonetheless, after a few weeks of this internal battle, it started to go away.

I even did a few experiments, like letting it act, to see how far it would go. VERY BAD IDEA. NEVER let your egos control you. I got close to being out of control; it wanted to take things to the next step of being violent. Have you heard of people killing others and then saying, “I don’t know what got into me”? Well, this is how it happens — and why it is SO important to eliminate your egos.

One good example of an ego common in society is jealousy. I have never experienced this ego, since I believe I eliminated it in a past life; but I have seen it in action in many men and women. People let this monster (ego) take control, and all sorts of bad things come their way — from the loss of a loved one to body pains ranging from a headache to a heart attack or a seizure. Never in my life have I experienced jealousy, whether from others or in an intimate relationship. What this has brought me, in this life, is peace of mind, good health, and plenty more time to enjoy life to the fullest. Now almost nothing can make me angry, and most definitely no one can make me jealous. If you experience the ego of jealousy, do yourself a favor and get rid of it. It is just an ego. You can get rid of it.

You may think, for example, that you do not have the ego of a thief — but most likely you do. If you are a very young child and everything is given to you, the ego of theft is in hibernation; there is no opportunity for it to come out. And if you are a young person or an adult with financial abundance, that ego is most likely in hibernation too, and much more difficult to find and detect. This is where egos come out in dreams. Yes — another thing you should learn is how to remember your dreams. Once you find an ego in your dream, proceed to the judgment and elimination steps. Egos do NOT need to be part of what and who you are. You can get rid of them.
